Virtual cells

Extended reality
A navigable 3D learning environment and animated teaching videos in the area of cell biology for the repetition of basic knowledge and to help students build correct mental models

Abstract

The goal of this project is to create a web-based learning environment on the theme of cell biology for secondary schools and the first semester of studies in Biology. This can be used as independent study material, for repetition of basic material and as a fund of materials for faculty. The core of the learning environment is a virtual accessible cell model via which a cell can be experienced in three dimensions. Learners can move around in the space by using the mouse, call up information on individual cell structures and select further learning sequences. The latter include animations, films, images and diagrams and address individual themes more closely. To check the knowledge gained every learning sequence includes test exercises. In addition to the virtual cell model and the learning sequences the learning environment includes a faculty forum in which teaching material and media are made available for teaching purposes. The possibility of exchange among faculty has been taken into account, and media has been made available for use via an ETH LMS (Moodle, OLAT, etc.).

The project will be conducted in two stages. The learning sequences of the first stage contain the knowledge required to commence basic lectures. The media of the first stage are also suitable for use in first-year lectures. If the evaluation is successful, we will formulate a second application to extend the learning environment which includes further content from first-year studies.
