Solid Materials and Nano Science – Basics and Applications (SoMaNa) Project part 1: New Materials for Energy Storage, Power Transport and Energy Conversion
Abstract
Solid state chemistry, physics and materials sciences are intrinsically coupled research fields, with an expanding overlap necessity for applications and in nano sciences. SoMaNa aims at a web-based teaching system for this interdisciplinary research field, linked to the lectures of “Anorganische Chemie IV” (Nesper), “Technische Elektrochemie” (Wokaun, Novàk), and to assist all lectures on solid state matters at ETH. The goal is to provide online problem-based learning-modules covering important solid state teaching contents related to applicational obstacles. As suggested by Studienkommission, we split the project into smaller parts. Here we propose project part 1 focusing on problems of the future electric car, i.e. on possible solutions for energy storage, transport and conversion.
To introduce learners into the complex problem situation, a three-step approach is utilized: a) problem definition, b) development of physico-chemical backgrounds, c) possible solution routes. It is assumed that the accompanying modern visualization allows for a more comprehensive understanding and tackling of problems. We will develop around 150 new visual learning objects, especially interactive 3D-objects, animations and stereo-pictures as for communicating complicated spatial relations. A teaching resource library will provide all visual learning objects to ETH docents, and a web-based crystal structure gallery will be available for all.
