Small project: E-learning unit Atlas Switzerland

Digitalisation and blended learning
An introduction to the Atlas of Switzerland which is soundly structured, pedagogically speaking, is demanding for instructors and learners, which is one reason why there is room for improvement in its teaching both inside and outside ETH Zurich. Up until now there has been no e-learning unit which enables learners to familiarize themlselves with it.

Abstract

The digital Atlas of Switzerland (Version 2) (AdS) is a product which is ideally suited to presenting the uses of digital cartography and geographical information systems (GIS) in teaching to the general public. The AdS (www.atlasderschweiz.ch) is an award-winning product of the ETHZ Institute of Cartography. An introduction to it which is soundly structured, pedagogically speaking, is demanding for instructors and learners, which is one reason why there is room for improvement in its teaching both inside and outside ETH Zurich. Up until now there has been no e-learning unit which enables learners to familiarize themlselves with it.

Version 3 of the AdS is planned to appear in Spring Semester 2009. Its scientific editors are specifically requesting a pedagogical overhaul of AdS’s content and function. The corresponding collaboration would be the aim of the proposed small project.

Innovative elements

The most significant added value will lie in improvements in the AdS portal for students and in how faculty use AdS in courses. The pedagogical concept specifically developed for AdS will become a firm component of didactic training at ETHZ. The knowledge and findings of current projects (GITTA, e-cartouche) will also benefit.
