Abstract

The lecture course Art and Science has been held since 2000 (Spring Semester, compulsory elective UWIS and GESS; 1 hour weekly, 6th semester, 10-20 students) and addresses the relationship, similarities, differences and potential synergies of art and science. The learning objective is for students to recognise advantages and problems of this transdisciplinarity and to be motivated to wider and more creative thinking.

The lecture topic is extraordinarily wide, multi-layered and demanding. Seven years experience has shown that good pedagogy is best served when in addition to imparting the basics he characteristics and relationship of art and science are presented in the form of concrete themes. Until now examples of such have been provided in the classroom (e.g. the theme of gravitation in art and science, the relationship of art and science to nature, etc).

To improve the pedagogical structure this project will offer students the chance to draw up a theme themselves. A web-based learning environment will facilitate this. In addition to these focus themes the learning environment will contain further elements (see the scenario) and help students learn in a research sense to question subject matter, develop constructive ideas and draw creative solutions.
