Skills for Scientific Practice in Plant Sciences (SkriPS)
Abstract
The Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center would like to launch a competence training course ‹Skills for Scientific Practice in Plant Sciences (SkriPS)› for students of three ETH Masters degree programmes in the framework of the initiative ‹Master’s Studies and Master’s Courses in Plant Sciences› and for those at doctoral level in the PSC PhD programme. This course will fill a gap in graduate student training and will also (1) help students develop a consciousness of the problems associated with scientific writing (‹Publishing›), and (2) increase their competence in reading and writing, and inhibit the increase in plagiarism. This will all proceed in the context of two new blended learning courses: (1) ‹Responsible Conduct in Scientific Practice› and (2) ‹Scientific Writing Practice›. Parallel to these PSC will coordinate ‹Embedded Scientific Writing Courses in Plant Sciences›, i.e. writing-intensive courses which are already offered by the PSC partner organisations (ETH Zurich, the University of Basel, the University of Zurich), and open them to all PSC graduate students. PSC will extend these courses with an online, trans-course platform which helps students to write better. All courses will be academically based in Plant Sciences.
