Abstract

Responsive Cities | ETHx on edX | Course About Video www.youtube.com

Responsive Cities is the third in a series of «Future Cities» MOOCs. It will feature (1) Active Learning: for
the first time, ETH students will directly interact in parallel with their teachers and colleagues at ETH and
with the participants of the ongoing interactive MOOC; ETH students thus benefit from the ETH teaching
environment, and at the same time from their MOOC partners throughout the world; (2) Research driven
Learning: Responsive Cities will teach the basics of Urban Science research, and the results will be accessible
to all ETH and MOOC students on a design research platform for Citizen Design Science – something
not achievable in traditional courses.
Responsive Cities builds on the experiences with our first urban MOOCs: (1) «Future Cities» as an introductory
course with more than 25’000 registrations in 2014 and 2015, and (2) «Liveable Future Cities» with contributions
from 10 eminent ETH faculty in Zürich and Singapore, starting in September 2015. The ETH –
exclusive elective course «Responsive Cities» starts in the Fall of 2015 and will be carefully evaluated.
The added value for ETH students from the inclusive ETH «Responsive Cities» elective course and MOOC,
planned for the Fall of 2016, can then be measured directly by comparing the results of the courses from
2015 and 2016.
