Abstract

At a technical university mathematics has a prominent position: it is the basis of the natural and engineering sciences. These constantly undergo technological change. To concretely address the qualitative change in the mathematics competence profile and in the later careers of graduates, mathematics education needs to be innovatively supported, restructure and improved with new media: it will deepen and make transparent processes which can be adjusted to the individual by fostering experimental learning or self-steered exercises.

The mathematical e-learning system MUMIE, developed under open-source licence especially for the deployment of interactive multimedia resources, has great potential to implement this pedagogical concept for mathematics, comprehensively and in a targeted manner. In the framework of the project it will be installed at D-MATH, developed further, linked to the ETH LMS portfolio, and deployed in several ways to decisively improve teaching and learning of mathematics at ETH. For the duration of the project, an initial six Chairs of Mathematics will receive support. They will reach ca. 1000 students each semester via at least seven courses which include basic mathematics (particularly Numerics) and engineering lectures. These pilot projects will create a basis for the sustainable integration and long-term curricular embedding of this new concept in ETH mathematics courses.
