Lehrcanapé [Teaching canapé]
Abstract
EXPERIMENTAL TEACHING – The teaching experiment ‹Lehrcanapé› nimm Platz! (course name: Lehrcanapé) at Philip Ursprung’s Chair of Art and Architectural History has been running since Autumn Semester 2011. It was initiated with the intention to provide students with an open teaching format within which they can decide on the course programme and the structure of teaching.
NETWORKING – In the context of the Lehrcanapé project issues of contemporary culture relevant to architectural training and research will be investigated and discussed via a cooperation of students and faculty. In elaborating the Lehrcanapé project students can hone their project development, teamwork, discussion and consensual abilities; they will have to position themselves, conduct debates and assume responsibility for public relations. Networking of all participants in the context of theme-specific project development and implementation requires close personal supervision of students. The use of digital communication and work technology can intensify networking among students and with representatives of other disciplines, the professional world and inspiring personalities.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS – We wish to further intensify networking by deploying additional staff and by using digital technology such as e-learning tools. Additional funding for the Lehrcanapé project is required for this.
Success factors
• Lehrcanapé activates a large number of students and inspires them to participate in the shaping of teaching.
• The Lehrcanapé e-learning tool both allows students to network closely and inspirse them to collaborate in novel ways.
• The increased independence of students who participate in Lehrcanapé will benefit them in other courses.
Innovative elements
• Students determine the substance and structure of the course by developing the Lehrcanapé project themselves.
• An e-learning tool aligned specifically with the Lehrcanapé course supports students and faculty in developing the project in groups and in implementing the selected Lehrcanapé project.
• In the context of relevant themes of contemporary culture students hone their interdisciplinary capabilities. At the same time, the processing and discussion of these themes delivers a preliminary assessment of whether these themes are significant for present and future artistic, architectural and urban development.
