lab-course: energy efficient production

Lab-based learning Project-based education Extended reality
In the tripartite lab-course "Energy Efficient Production" students will learn on a practical example how such problems will be solved in industry. The students are aware of the topic and its challenges, learn about analyzing of the problem, computations and modeling are discussed, supported by illustrative test stands and measurements with an implementation on a real 5-axis machine tool.

Abstract

Within the Bachelor program Mechanical Engineering student can earn two credit by attending the lab courses, offered to students from the 4th semester. In the lab course «Energy Efficient Production», the students develop analyzing methods for the challenges and practical solutions.

• The description of the lab course in detail is given in the appended project proposal

Success factors

• Elaboration of complex topics using practical and theoretical elements and a strong interaction between the students and the supervising doctoral student within a four hours lesson
• The students experience the challenges of energy efficient production and work in a working environment with modern measurement and laboratory equipment.
• The students learn to model complex systems and to derive effective measures to increase the energy efficiency of machine tools.

Innovative elements

During these lab courses, the students have the unique possibility to deal with the current challenges of energy efficient production. The usage of test benches and a 5-axis machine tool realizes a strong relation to the challenges.

Room for improvement

The planed experiments were adapted and additional measurement equipment, for example an infrared camera, was integrated into the lab courses due to the feedback of the students. This realizes a detailed visualization of the temperature distribution for the students.

Opinion of students

• The combination of real technical problems, current research topics and social challenges is very interesting for the students.
• The students appreciate especially the detailed supervision during the lab courses.

Tips for lecturers

• Lab courses are a perfect possibility to show the students complex research topics in a demonstrative manner.
• The industry and research orientated laboratory equipment allows the students to apply their knowledge from other classes to current research questions.
• The immediate discussion of the results with the students allows a direct feedback about their learning progress.
