GIS Repetition based on audio-visual Podcast Elements
Together with our students, we are going to develop a portfolio of audio-visual repetition units focusing on our learning objectives.
Abstract
The GISTeam within the Chair of Forest Engineering is responsible for the training in Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) at D-USYS. With the project GRAPE – GIS Repetition with Audio-visual Podcast Elements and its learning effectiveness – we wanted to complement the learning material of our GIST introductory course with an attractive audio-visual learning medium. This should allow the students to
– deepen their knowledge during the basic course and to consolidate it before the final exam;
– check, and if necessary, to reactivate it before the master course begins.
Together with our students, we developed a portfolio of audio-visual repetition units (RepU) focusing on our learning objectives. Each unit consists of a short podcast (approx. 5 minutes), followed by exercises and solutions with links to background knowledge, literature, etc. All together, working through a unit should not take longer than 20 minutes.
In addition, we assessed the effectiveness of our RepU based on the following questions:
– Were the repetition units able to help the students to consolidate the GIST basic knowledge?
– Were the results of the final exam improved through the use of our repetition units?
– Did self-studying with the repetition units have a larger learning effect than the in-class repetition at the beginning of the master course?
