Abstract

CartouCHe provides a comprehensive overview of the new fields of multimedia cartography and its application on CD-ROM, web-based and portable devices. The three main topics Multimedia Cartography, Location Based Services (LBS), and 3D Applications were covered. Therefore, the original goal to develop an highly interactive e-learning course for multimedia cartography was achieved. Furthermore, evaluations from Group Leaders, ETH eLearning Center NET and from students were done with positive results.
Problems occurred in the time management of the project. That was the result of the delayed start and some authors leaving the project. The half year prolongation made up for the delay. From a technical point of view the accessibility with different browsers and plugins caused compatibility problems.
Currently, only one minor, but positive divergence between the proposal and the deliverables occured: IKA realized 11 instead of 10 lessons. A long lesson was split to serve the purpose of step-by-step learning better.
Since CartouCHe is used in blended learning mode, the added value of the course for teachers is the easier preparation of their lectures through the dispose of the time-consuming search for examples and literature. Additionally, it has the positive effect of allowing the students to prepare the lecture, which may lead to a better interaction between student and teacher during the lectures. The students will be allowed sufficient time for self-driven learning at home. They also have access to the content day and night and can use the offered PDF script for their preparation of the exams. Additionally, they can explore the interactive and animated examples by their own, which leads to a better understanding and an easier recapitulation of the content. Since the CartouCHe lessons are available in English, also foreign students can attend this course in their own country. This allows the ETH Zurich and their partner institutions (University Zurich and FHNW) to become important competence centers for cartographic issues. It consolidates their leading role in the cartography. Also the CartouCHe partners reported significant added values, since they gain new competences and ideas through the access to the whole bundle of newest research. Also, they can use all 3 modules, but only need to integrate new items and updates for their own topic.
